[He gives a short laugh, shaking his head.]

Oh well, I think I can handle that. What about your two guys from home?

Blood loss, not ideal. But don't worry, I don't need apologies so long as you don't keep going at it like that. Anyway-- Sam is a good guy. Really, he's kind of like our kid brother.

[He did turn a little wistful at that. It was strange, he was acquiring a family despite being forced to leave his behind. So in the end, maybe the world wasn't as bad off as people thought? Still bad, but not the end of...

Simon's complicated. He's the kind of guy that I'd like to like, but I just can't.

I wasn't planning on it. I got thoroughly told off by Adele and slightly worried that next time I won't be conscious enough to refuse a blood transfusion. [and that would be really really bad.]

You do both seem awfully fond of him.

[Max hasn't really had much interaction with him beyond courtesies when they pass in the hallway.]

Why's that? He seems pretty friendly.

[Mention of Adele made Eugene smile... but a little sad at the same time. He hadn't seen her for quite a while and she had been one hell of a physician. He knew quite a few of them, himself, and they were all particularly strong women.]

Sam's the radio operator back home, we kind of bump shoulders in the communication shack. And don't let Simon fool you, he is a wolf in sheep's clothing. That guy... he's not right. No one should train that much and be so damn chipper all the time.

Not... right? [Max gives Eugene a sceptical look. Admittedly, his definition of 'not right' was probably different to most people.]

It's the stuff... endorphins? Don't they make you happy? I mean, you get them from sex too and I'm always pretty buzzed after sex.

Y'know, I suspect he has an addiction to sex, to be honest. First thing on his mind... all the time.

[From the start he just hadn't gotten along with Simon, though it was mainly because of his interest in Jack that made his hackles rise. No matter who or when he thought about it]

I mean, we didn't live with the luxury of medication and the guy just kept going like that. It is really enough to drive you crazy. Also, I spoke to Helios the other day, I meant to tell you. He's an alright kind of guy, despite the... misgivings I had in the shift.

Is he an incubus? I've never met one of those personally. That would be cool.

[He grins though, the idea more amusing than it should be.]

Uh... you spoke to Helios? Oh I... he's a good guy. Sweet. I'm glad he meets with your approval, Gene.

I-- oh, I hope he isn't. That might explain his behavior around women though-- and some of theirs around him. I honestly cannot fathom what anyone sees in him.

[Maybe he was protesting too much. Or maybe his disdain for the guy was legitimate. Whatever it was, he gladly shifted topics from Simon to Helios]

Aren't you just? But hey, you know all about me and Jack, why keep Helios hidden away? I hardly ever hear about the two of you coming over or... or y'know doing things together. He's got an idea for an airship, which is something I've only heard of in movies and games, to be honest.

You never saw me when I was in university.

[Max can't help but grin, thoroughly amused by Eugene's grumpiness over their friend.]

I'm not... I don't keep him hidden away! We went out on his boat for my birthday. We do stuff. Just... he's kind of shy. He likes quiet stuff.

So what were you like at university?

[Since he hadn't seen Max at university either and Max's world seemed to be a fair bit stranger than his own. Comparatively speaking.]

And you went out on his boat for your birthday? Heh, that's actually not bad. I had a blast at that rave, though, truth be told. Best birthday I've had for a while.

Kind of a tearaway, I guess. Lots of parties and drinking, letting loose. It was fun. Not very responsible though.

Yeah, we did that. Had a picnic. It was romantic. The rave was pretty awesome though.

[His tone, however, was not surprised, and he stretched his arms over his head, head tipped to one side. That was the sort of guy he pegged Max as being, what with his lack of personal consideration-- toward himself, not necessarily toward others. Party-goers... had a tendency to be more reckless. But speaking of reckless...]

...You all didn't happen to be... close to the coast, were you?

Yeah, really. I had a blast for the most part.

[He gives Eugene a curious look and shrugs.]

Yeah. We sailed along the coast for a while, then set down on some gorgeous deserted cove with a beach and everything. Why?

No reason.

[surprisingly blasé, he quickly dismissed the question and gave Max a look that broached he wouldn't elaborate, but that whatever Max had missed, he was glad.]

...So, how do you feel about, ah, mom?

Right, like I believe that, Gene.

[He smirks over at him, accepting that evasion for now.]

Vastra? She's pretty awesome from everything I've seen.

[His grin was amicable and he didn't give an inch regarding what he and Jack got up to. Which was perfectly fine, leave a little mystery about their love lives]

We met her in a really wintry place, she was stuck in a tree, I think? Anyway, despite being cold-blooded, she's got a very big heart. I think we should... y'know, look after her, too...

Sounds like quite the story.

I'd be up for that. I like her a lot. She took good care of us.

It was during the shift, once. The one with me, Jack and that crazy car thing that we used to transport people with? The one where Jack...

[He licked his lips and thought better about thinking about that incident]

Y'know, the usual shenanigans we get up to.

The draft? Yeah, I remember. [He remembers too well Jack and Eugene picking him up half dead.]

Hmmm, shenanigans or shenanigans? 'cause the back of that vehicle looked kind of unhygenic for other kinds of activities.

Nothing like that! I promise, we were mostly good that entire draft. We know better than to... than to make out in a danger zone!

[They totally didn't but... he had to set a good example for his older brother.]

Mostly. That doesn't exactly fill me with confidence, 'Gene. I think making out in the danger zone is exactly what you do.

Tell me honestly, would you? [He leaned in a little, clasping his hands together with a grin]

If it was your possible last day on earth with a very attractive survival partner, would you bother to hold back? I'm not saying I haven't done that, but that we were professionals when we needed to be.

[Max snorts softly, shaking his head.]

'Gene, I kissed Helios after we'd just finished blowing up a bunch of robot things. I definitely have no place to talk.
